Digital Desk: Meghalaya Chief Minister Conrad Sangma will lead a high-level MDA 2.0 team to Delhi later this month to fight for the state's two long-standing demands, the inclusion of ILP and the Khasi and Garo languages in the Eighth Schedule.
The team is expecting that Prime Minister Modi and Union Home Minister Amit Shah will finally change their minds on the two complex demands that the state has been holding up for more than ten years.
The goal of their visit, according to MDA Spokesperson Paul Lyngdoh on Saturday, would be to resolve issues that could fundamentally alter the course of the state.
While addressing the media, he recalled that the State Assembly had passed a resolution supporting the addition of the Khasi and Garo languages to the Constitution's Eighth Schedule.
In order to press for bringing the demands to a logical conclusion, Lyngdoh, who is also a Cabinet minister, said, "This time around, we also have a plan to meet with all concerned authorities, including Prime Minister."
It should be noted that more than 13 lakh people who speak Khasi in Meghalaya, according to the 2011 Census.
According to Article 29 of the Constitution, any group of citizens with a unique language, script, or culture has the right to maintain it. This article claims that the Khasi language is eligible to join the other 22 languages included in the Eighth Schedule.
Notably, the Meghalaya State Legislature Act 2005 already recognises Khasi and Garos as associate official languages.
Evidently, due to the lack of distinct scripts for both Khasi and Garo, the central government is reluctant to incorporate these two languages in the Eighth Schedule.
Regarding the demand for ILP implementation, Lyngdoh claimed that the issue was also on fire, being thought about by the Ministry of Home Affairs, and having been brought up in Parliament.
So when we visit Delhi soon, this will also be on the agenda, Lyngdoh stated.
Prestone Tynsong, the deputy chief minister, had said on Thursday that Conrad K. Sangma, the chief minister, will take his whole cabinet to New Delhi to meet with Prime Minister Narendra Modi and Home Minister Amit Shah in order to apply intense pressure on Delhi to agree to the implementation of ILP in Meghalaya.
On these two topics, the state Assembly adopted resolutions.
"All parties in MDA must oppose UCC"
The Uniform Civil Code, a difficult subject that will affect Meghalaya, beckons while the state government pursues the ILP demand with the Centre.
All parties in the MDA 2.0 coalition government must oppose the implementation of the UCC, according to senior UDP leader Process T Sawkmie. He also noted that there is clear evidence that the NDA Government at the Centre is determined to introduce the UCC in the upcoming session of the Parliament.
"We fear that the UCC will interfere with our traditions and everyday routines. We are not certain how it will affect the various churches' statutes and ordinances," Sawkmie said.
However, he went on to say that because Articles 371A and 371G were applicable in Nagaland and Mizoram, the UCC would not apply to those two states.
He said, "we should make sure that UCC is not implemented in Meghalaya."
