Digital Desk: The Mizoram government is still waiting for financial support from the Centre for providing shelter to more than 12,600 refugees who had fled from violence-hit Manipur.

According to Mizoram Home Commissioner and Secretary H Lalengmawia, Chief Minister Zoramthanga had in May, sought 10 crore as an emergency relief package for individuals who had been displaced.

Mizoram Home Commissioner stated, "We have not received any assistance from the Centre so far. In order to help Manipuri refugees who have been internally displaced, the state administration has raised funds on its own.”

He anticipated that the Center will quickly provide financial support for these individuals, who have sought refuge in Mizoram after the ethnic violence erupted in the neighbouring state on May 3. Lalengmawia added that the Mizoram government had asked legislators, government employees, bankers, and others for donations.

However, 12,611 Manipuris have taken shelter in Mizoram till Friday.
According to the state's home department, till Friday, around 12,611 people from Manipur had taken shelter in Mizoram.

According to report, 4,440 of them sought refuge in the Kolasib area, 4,265 in Aizawl, and 2,951 in Saitual. The remaining 955 people are residing in the Champhai, Mamit, Siaha, Lawngtlai, Lunglei, Serchhip, Khawzawl, and Hnahthial districts. In Aizwal, Kolasib, and Saitual, the government and village authorities have set up 38 relief camps.

Food and other necessities were provided to the displaced people by the state government, NGOs, churches, and locals. After a 'Tribal Solidarity March' was organized across the hill districts to protest against the Meitei community's demand for Scheduled Tribe (ST) status, violence broke out in Manipur in early May.

The majority of Meiteis, who make up around 53% of Manipur's population, reside in the Imphal Valley. The tribes of the Naga and Kuki, who reside in the hill districts, make up another 40% of the population.
