Digital Desk: Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma replied on Thursday to an Assam Power Distribution Company Limited (APDCL) customer who complained about a Rs 44,000 electricity bill they received in June 2023.

The complainant addressed her grievance on Twitter, tagging the chief minister and APDCL. She wrote, "We have received a staggering bill of Rs 44000 from @apdclsocial despite 1 KW load in June. He wrote, "We have examined the matter. It was found that the meter reading is correct and done in Esuvidha. However, it is a case of accumulated readings, as the consumer was under billed by Meter reader named Sri Dilip Rajkhowa. The matter came to light that the meter reader didn’t prepare the bill on actual consumption. As a result, you received an enhanced bill. My apology for inconvenience caused."

Furthermore, the complainant referred to two additional consumer numbers and emphasised the incredible bill amounts that they received, ranging from Rs 83,000 to a whopping Rs 1.27 lakh for just one KW (kilowatt) consumption.

Earlier, the wife of Zubeen Garg, Garima Saikia Garg expressed her dissatisfaction with rising electricity bills on social media.

Garima took to social media to assert that she paid a Rs 10,500 payment last month and then refilled her prepaid power meter with Rs 2,000 in the first five days of this month.

Her post sparked considerable criticism, with people from many walks of life criticising the APDCL.

Recently, the APDCL has increased the monthly tariff for power consumption, causing problems for residents of the state.

The APDCL raised its charges by 30 paise per unit of power consumed, to 70 paise. The price hike is 30 paise per unit for users covered by the subsidised Jeevan Dhara plan, and 70 paise for everyone else.

It should be noted that APDCL issued a notification in connection with the case on May 27. According to the announcement, Jeevan Dhara customers would now have to pay Rs 4.35 per unit of electricity.

Furthermore, households utilizing 120 units would be charged Rs 5.25 per unit of power, while those consuming 121 to 240 units will be charged Rs 7.30 per unit, according to the notification mentioned.

The notice further stated that households consuming 5 to 30 kilowatts of electricity will be charged Rs 8.15 per unit, while business organisations will be charged Rs 8.60 per unit.
