NRC Scam Report: Assam Government files case against Prateek Hajela
An FIR was lodged with Assam Police's CID branch in May 2021 against Prateek Hajela...

Digital Desk: The Assam government registered a case on Wednesday against the former coordinator of the National Register of Citizens (NRC) Prateek Hajela, for his alleged role in the publication of the final draught of the contentious list.

The complaint was launched by the state government, which took suo moto cognizance of the matter. The state government decided in response to the report submitted by the Comptroller and Auditor General of India (CAG).

The CAG audit uncovered multiple flaws in the NRC list update procedure. Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma stated today that Prateek Hajela should accept voluntary retirement (VRS).

"It would be better if Prateek Hajela took VRS," stated CM Sarma. If he takes VRS, it will be a win for the people of Assam." he added.

It should be noted that in May 2021, an FIR was filed with Assam Police's CID branch against Prateek Hajela, who had led the updating and publication of the controversial document under the supervision of the Supreme Court, charging him with an antinational act for facilitating the entry of names of ineligible persons as Indian citizens in the document.

The NRC authority has filed an affidavit in the Supreme Court requesting a comprehensive and time-bound re-verification of the published NRC because substantial anomalies were committed while producing the document.

Meanwhile, the state's BJP-led government requested the re-verification of 20% of data in districts bordering Bangladesh and 10% of data in interior districts.

Notably, Prateek Hajela initiated the process of amending the 1951 NRC, and the final list was published in August 2019. The final list includes the names of 3,11,21,004 people but excludes the names of 19,06,657 people.

The NRC authority has filed an affidavit in the Supreme Court asking for an extensive and deadline-driven reconsideration of the published NRC because significant irregularities took place during the document's drafting.

The FIR also names a few additional policemen and data entry operators as having "conspired" with Hajela.
