No land transfers between Hindus and Muslims without CM’s approval: Assam CM Sarma
The proposed ruling seeks to address and penalize those who allegedly exploit interfaith relationships for ulterior motives...

Digital Desk: In a significant announcement at the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) State Executive meeting held at Srimanta Sankardev Kalakshetra, Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma declared a major policy change regarding inter-religion land transfers.

Addressing the gathering, Sarma revealed, “Earlier, inter-religion land transfers happened freely. Hindus used to buy land from Muslims, and Muslims used to buy land from Hindus. We cannot stop the buying or selling of lands. However, the Assam government has now decided that for a Hindu's land to be bought by a Muslim, and vice versa, the Chief Minister's approval will be required. Without the Chief Minister's approval, no land buying or selling between Hindus and Muslims will take place.” This policy aims to regulate and oversee such transactions, requiring the highest level of administrative approval.

Additionally, Sarma announced the upcoming introduction of a stringent new law targeting 'love jihad.' He declared that the state government will soon mandate life imprisonment for individuals convicted of engaging in 'love jihad,' a term used to describe deceitful romantic relationships where an individual's religion or identity is concealed. The proposed legislation seeks to address and penalize those who allegedly exploit interfaith relationships for ulterior motives.

These significant policy shifts align Assam's legal stance with recent proposals from Uttar Pradesh, reflecting the BJP's broader strategy to address sensitive issues related to interfaith interactions. The announcement highlights the Assam government's commitment to regulate inter-religion dynamics and ensure transparency and fairness in such matters.
