Digital desk: The Assam police detained several members of the Aam Aadmi Party (AAP), including Bhaben Choudhary, the party’s candidate for the Dibrugarh Lok Sabha constituency, and Bhaben Choudhary, the party’s Assam president.
The leaders organized a protest outside the local Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) headquarters, which led to their detention in Assam's Dibrugarh district. The AAP leaders were demonstrating against the Enforcement Directorate's detention of Delhi Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal.
Rajesh Sharma, the AAP's northeast regional leader, called the chief minister's detention fake and said it was an act of politics. People held placards and the AAP flags during the protest outside the BJP office in the Dibrugarh district of Assam. They also called for Arvind Kejriwal's instant release.
Meanwhile, the chief minister of Delhi made the decision to withdraw his appeal against his ED detention on the grounds of possible anomalies in the Delhi excise policy for 2021–2022.
Kejriwal is scheduled to appear in a special Rouse Avenue courtroom, where the ED is expected to make a custody request. After the Delhi Court denied his application for temporary protection and questioned why he hadn't filed for anticipatory bail from the lower court sooner, he was taken into custody.
As per reports, Kejriwal will now, per protocol, go before a trial court. The Delhi CM, who passed the night in the ED's Abdul Kalam Road office in Delhi, will also appear before a special court that hears the agency's cases.
Kejriwal's legal team informed about the decision to withdraw its plea, stating that they were not hopeful about receiving a favorable outcome considering the Supreme Court's ruling on Bharat Rashtra Samithi leader Kavitha's appeal.
This is the third time that an important APP leader has been detained as a result of the probe. Sanjay Singh, the Rajya Sabha MP for the AAP, and former deputy chief minister Manish Sisodia were earlier detained for interrogation.
