According to the most recent census data released by the national park management, Kaziranga National Park is now home to 2,613 rhinos, and their numbers are growing.
Digital Desk: Prime Minister Narendra Modi lauded the efforts of Assam to save rhinos as the state reported zero incidents of rhino poaching in 2022. On Sunday's first day of 2023, Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma informed the people of this good news while speaking with reporters.
Following CM Sarma’s Tweet, PM Modi said,” This is great news! Compliments to the people of Assam, who have shown the way and been proactive in their efforts to protect the rhinos.”
Moreover, GP Singh, Special DGP of Assam, shared data on year-by-year rhino poaching incidents in the state and said, "Our efforts against rhino poaching have yielded good results. In 2022, not a single rhino was killed by poachers in Assam. The last such incident happened on December 28, 2021, in Hilkund, Kohora, Golaghat district. Our efforts against poaching will continue."
The special DGP released data on the number of rhino poaching in the state since 2000. According to the data he gave, there were 27 poaching incidents each in 2013 and 2014. The number of rhinos killed by poachers was 17 and 18, respectively, in 2015 and 2016, before falling to two in 2020 and 2021 and zero in 2022. Before the introduction of intense scrutiny and other enhanced security measures by the authorities, rhino poaching was on the rise, but it has now been reduced. Assam is well-known for its one-horned rhinos, and many people visit here to see these animals.
According to the most recent census data released by the national park management, Kaziranga National Park is now home to 2,613 rhinos, and their numbers are growing. The Assam Government publicly burnt a stockpile of 2,479 horns in September 2022 to send a strong message to poachers that don't attach any medicinal or monetary value. Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarm then said, "The use of rhinos' horns for medicinal purposes is a myth."
