    Population of Rhino Increased in Orang National Park

    The two-day census began in the park on Sunday and ended today (March 21).


    Digital Desk: The rhino population at Assam's Orang National Park has risen by 24 since 2018, Pradipta Baruah, DFO, Mangaldoi wildlife division informed on Monday.

    rhino population surveyThe DFO made the announcement following the completion of a two-day rhino population survey in the park on Monday.

    "I am pleased to inform you that the rhino population has risen significantly during the last few years. A total of 125 rhinos have been recorded." said the DFO. 

    Further, Baruah claimed that there had been an increase in rhino population to 24 since its last assessment conducted in 2018.

    "Among the total rhinos in Orang National Park, there are 43 males, 49 females, and 23 calves, while so far, the sex of the rest 10 rhinos was unknown," Baruah said.

    Reportedly, the two-day census began in the park on Sunday and ended today (March 21).

    Along with forest personnel, officials from rhino conservation organizations such as WWF and Aaranyak, as well as faculty from Mangaldoi College, took part in the estimation process.

    Notably, the Park recorded a total of 101 Rhinos in the most recent census.

    Throughout this period, nine rhinos died due to natural causes; however, no rhinos were hunted by poachers, officials reports said.
