Digital Desk: Veteran actor Biju Phukan, popularly known as Biju da, left for his heavenly abode on November 22, 2017. Biju Phukan, who was born on February 18, 1947, in Dibrugarh, died at the Apollo Hospital in Guwahati. He had appeared in over 50 films and several plays in various roles. He had been living in Panjabari, Guwahati, for several years with his wife Rajashree, son Angshuman, and daughter Sanghamitra.
Phukan, who made his film debut in a dance sequence in Brojen Barua's Dr. Bezbarua in 1970, was regarded as one of Assam's most natural actors. He made his debut as a hero in the film 'Baruar Songshar'. Aranya, Bonoriya Phool, Momota, Brishti, Natun Asha, Dharmakai, Meghmukti, Ajali Nabou, Upapath, Bowari, Agnisnaan, Bohagor Duporia, Aparupa, Mon Mondir, Anthony Mur Naam, Pita Putra, and Abhimaan were among his several hits.
Samarendra Narayan Dev's 'Aranya," which established the iconic star as a "hero," won the Best Regional Film award at the National Film Awards in 1971.

The actor appeared in a few Bengali movies, in addition to Hotel Showfox, Aparajita, Doishyu Ratnakar, and Gajamukta. He was also drawn towards mobile theatre and worked at Lakhimi Theatre and Theatre Bhagyadebi. He was also a member of the jury for Indian Panorama.
Despite his declining health since 2013, Phukan has shown a great desire to return to the film industry. The actor, who was well-known for having a charming personality, was also active in politics and other fields. He participated in the Lok Sabha elections twice, representing Guwahati and Dibrugarh.
Reportedly, he had only two flops in his entire career. Even his film songs, particularly those by Jayanta Hazarika, were major hits. One of his popular and chart-topping songs was "Mon Hira Doi" from the film 'Bowari'. Apart from films, Biju Phukan appeared in several plays as a child artist in Dibrugarh.
The legendary actor also stepped into the world of direction through the Assamese film 'Bhai Bhai'.
