The Assam police also decided that all of the officers associated to the above districts will be transferred after speaking with the state's chief minister.
Digital Desk: In an important move in the investigation into the mysterious death of Morikolong sub-inspector (SI) Junmoni Rabha, Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma has ordered Assam Director General of Police (DGP) GP Singh to visit the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) office in New Delhi on Monday.
According to reports, the DGP will be heading to the nation's capital to talk about CID Assam's decision to transfer responsibility for the investigation into the death of SI Junmoni Rabha to the top investigative police agency.
Speaking to the media, Assam DGP GP Singh stated, "On the directions of the Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma, I will be visiting the CBI office on Monday. In New Delhi, we will speak with senior CBI officers. After the discussion, hopefully, the death case involving SI Junmoni Rabha will be given to CBI.
Notably, the CBI can only investigate crimes suo moto in Union Territories. But only with the approval of the State Government in question can the Central Government direct the CBI to look into a crime in a state.
In addition, without the permission of the State, the Supreme Court and High Courts may also direct the CBI to look into a crime anywhere in the nation.
Earlier on May 20, Assam's Director General of Police (DGP), GP Singh, had officially stated that after carefully examining every aspect of the case and speaking with Assam's CID and senior police officers, he had recommended to the state's government that the CBI handle the investigation of all four cases that had been filed in Assam's Nagaon and Lakhimpur districts.
The Assam police also decided that all of the officers associated to the above districts will be transferred after speaking with the state's chief minister, Himanta Biswa Sarma.
DGP GP Singh stated during the press conference held in Guwahati, "I also want to put it on record that this decision of mine to send the probe to CBI has been reached on two grounds. Given the public sentiments, their requests and demands that the cases be transferred to the CBI, as well as the fact that one of our officers has lost her life, it is thought appropriate that the case be examined by an impartial body. I would also like to add that this choice of mine in no way calls into question the expertise of CID Assam given what I have observed of their investigation over the past three days. All the cases that have been entrusted to CID Assam in the last few years have been examined and brought to the logical conclusion, and I have the utmost respect for the capability that CID Assam has demonstrated throughout the last few years. To be clear, I've decided to move the cases to the CBI for the sake of neutrality and public opinion.”
The top officer further said that the Assam Police had decided to suggest to the state government that the CBI take over the investigation of the Nagaon PS case, case no. 443/23, which was one of the four cases. The case was filed on May 5, 2023.
Lakhimpur PS case (183/23) was filed on May 15, 2023, and it is the second case related to the suspicious death of SI Rabha. Similarly, two more cases were registered in Jakhalabandha PS (84/23) on May 16 and (87/23) on May 19, 2023, informed the DGP further.
