Sale of machine-made traditional clothing to be restrained in Assam

Digital Desk: In preparation for Bohag Bihu, the Assam government has made the decision to launch a special effort to prevent the sale of state-specific traditional clothing made on power looms, such as gamosa, mekhela sador, and aronai.

The special campaign, which will run from March 1 to April 14, aims to protect the state's traditional weavers who have been adversely affected by the selling of machine-made traditional clothing, mostly bought from outside the region.

Assam CM Himanta Biswa Sarma spoke to the media on Tuesday and explained that the restriction was part of a bigger initiative to promote the Assamese traditional weaving sector and discourage the sale and purchase of manufactured goods. 

"In the past, campaigns have been held to stop the sale of these conventional goods made on power looms. Now, I've asked the DCs and SPs to step up their efforts to prevent the sale of such products made on power looms between March 1 and April 14. I've also asked them to contact the textile merchants' association and ask it to stop buying such products from outside the state before they are seized, CM Sarma stated."
