Digital desk: Assam Union Minister of Ports, Shipping, and Waterways, Sarbananda Sonowal, unveiled 10 waterways projects totaling a significant investment of Rs. 645 crore to increase capacity along the Brahmaputra River. The suggested projects aim to promote public transportation and river tourism in Assam. The proposed projects seek to bolster river tourism and public commutes in Assam.
The central government would provide full funding support for these efforts under the Ministry of Ports, Shipping & Waterways' flagship "Sagarmala program." To increase connectivity and promote economic progress, their objective is to upgrade the riverine infrastructure and ports along the Brahmaputra.
Sonowal said, “Under the dynamic leadership of Prime Minister Shri Narendra Modi ji, we are and have been trying to explore newer avenues and tap the immense potential of waterways in the country. Brahmaputra (NW 2) has been the lifeline for the people of northeastern Assam. Modiji gave us the direction to harness the power of Brahmaputra and develop the waterways to develop an alternative, economical, environmentally sound, and effective mode of transportation."
He also added, "These 10 new projects, which will be developed under the prestigious Sagarmala program of the Government of India, are designed to boost connectivity, smooth & upgrade public transportation, and nourish economic growth. These Sagarmala projects will be developed building on ferry infrastructure, fleet modernization, and as well boosting last-mile connectivity."
“Despite the neglect of riverways before 2014, we have made substantial progress under PM Modi's leadership. These new projects will further bolster maritime infrastructure, promoting trade and commerce via the Brahmaputra,” Sonowal further added.
One of these initiatives is building slipways at key areas, such as Maya Ghat in the Majuli and Dhubri districts of Assam. Furthermore, passenger terminals would be built in the districts of Ghagor, in North Lakhimpur, and Bahari, in Barpeta. Every plan is crafted to improve connections and enable smooth transit around the area.
To serve the various demands of Assamese areas, other passenger terminals are planned to be built in Goalpara, Guijan, Kurua, Dhubri, Disangmukh, and Matmora. These ten initiatives seek to increase trade in the area, spur industrial development, and improve transportation efficiency.
Projects worth over Rs 1,000 crore have been started under the Sagarmala scheme, with the development of northeastern states—including Assam—as a top priority. Over Rs 760 crore worth of initiatives are currently under development in Assam alone, demonstrating the government's commitment to the advancement of the area.
Along the Brahmaputra, the Ministry of Ports, Shipping, and Waterways (MoPSW) is actively promoting river tourism and water sports. At Oriumghat, Bhupen Hazarika Setu, Kaliabhomora Bridge at Tezpur, Bogibeel Bridge, Dikhow Mukh, Kalongmukh, and Uzanbazar in Guwahati, seven tourist jetties will be built.
