Seven State Colleges Will Be Given University Status: CM Himanta Biswa Sarma

Digital Desk: The Assam government has decided to grant university status to seven state colleges. After that, the state will have a total of 10 universities.

These seven colleges are: Sibsagar College, Gurucharan College, J.B  College, Kokrajhar College, North Lakimpur College, Nowgong College and Bongaigaon College.

On Twitter, Assam CM Himanta Biswa Sarma wrote, "In our endeavour to make Assam as an educational hub of Eastern India, we are planning to upgrade 7 colleges to university status.Once this happens , we would have established 10 new universities in the State since 2021. Yesterday, I met with the principals of these colleges."

However, the possibility of Handique Girls' College getting university status looks to be an unlikely goal, as the Assam government considers new measures to transform colleges in the state into universities.

Assam's chief minister, Himanta Biswa Sarma, stated on June 16 that the government of Assam will introduce bills in the August assembly session to establish new universities in Sibsagar College, Kokrajhar Government College, Bongaigaon College, JB College-Jorhat, North Lakhimpur College, Nagaon College, and Gurucharan College amid confusion regarding proposed universities to make provisions for the accommodation of the concept of "Constituent College."

However, because Handique College does not currently have enough land, it will take time to upgrade the institution.

Handique Girls' College currently serves 2,700 students, and the institution would require more land to evolve into a university, according to sources.

On June 3, 2023, CM Himanta Biswa Sarma introduced the National Education Policy (NEP) 2020 in all State Universities and Colleges. Assam is one of the first states in the country to implement the NEP 2020. All higher education institutions in the state will now offer a four-year undergraduate program.

The courses are based on the National Education Policy (NEP) 2020, which aims to improve India's educational system.

Earlier, the Assam CM stated that for the first time, a liberal education policy had been formed, removing the tight distinctions between the three fields (science, arts, and commerce).

It should be noted that the NEP 2020, which was introduced in July 2020, provides a set of guiding principles for a paradigm shift across the Indian educational system, from primary to postgraduate levels.
