Digital Desk: Assam Rifles intercepted the cross-border smuggling of illegal goods in the Kamjong District of Manipur, which borders Myanmar on the east. They also reported that they had found 15,230 bags of areca nuts, totaling about 1,321.62 tonnes and valued at about Rs. 159 crore in the regional markets.
Based on reliable information indicating the unauthorized movement of areca nuts in the Kangpat Center and Kangpat Khunou areas of the Kamjong District, many search operations were launched.
A total of 109 Indian trucks that were involved in the illicit transportation of contraband goods were successfully intercepted by them.
As a result of the operations, a sizable amount of dumped areca nuts that were possibly meant for illegal distribution in the local black markets were seized.
After an in-depth investigation, the search activities resulted in significant discoveries, including 15,230 bags of areca nuts weighing about 1,321.62 tonnes, which are estimated to be worth around Rs. 159 crores on the illegal market in the region.
The officers further stated that the Forest Beat Officer of Kamjong District seized these seized items.
