Digital Desk: Suspended Congress MLA of Assam Sherman Ali Ahmed was taken into custody on Monday by Barpeta police after he allegedly opposed the eviction drive in the Baghbor constituency.
The eviction drive was carried out in the Satra Kanara village of the Barpeta district.
According to sources, the drive resulted in the release of some 400 bighas of illegally occupied government land at Satra Kanara's seat number twelve.
A week prior, the district administration had distributed circulars to the residents of the government lands, warning them of the eviction effort.
However, officials reported that during the early-morning drive today, about 40 families had to be evicted.
Ahmed was also detained on a sedition charge the previous year due to his "provocative" comments against the eviction drive in the Darrang district. He was taken into custody in his MLA apartment in Dispur.
