Guwahati: Going strict on New Year revelers and party goers, Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma has made it clear the drivers won't be allowed to drive vehicles under the influence of alcohol on the New Year's Eve. Anyone found travelling drunk or drivers who are drunk and ferrying the passengers to their destinations, will be detained for the night and would be allowed to leave only next morning.

Himanta Biswa Sarma while addressing the media said, "This time, people under the influence of alcohol won't be allowed to drive around the city. I have no objection to parties on December 31, but the one driving the vehicle should not be under the influence of alcohol."

"Every year, a lot of people die during the New Year's Eve celebrations. We are not going to let that happen this year. I have clearly told the police about it. Those found travelling with a drunk driver will be Government guests for the night," CM Sarma further added.

It may be noted here that Guwahati reports higher number of accident cases every year, with most of them caused due to drunk driving.
