In response to the problem, the Joint Action Committee (JAC) has also demanded a Sikkim Bandh on February 8.
Digital Desk: Police reported that on Sunday, violence broke out in Namchi in the South Sikkim district after members of the governing Sikkim Krantikari Morcha (SKM) allegedly vandalised an office of the opposition Sikkim Democratic Front (SDF).
When the SDF declared a 48-hour bandh in protest of the Supreme Court's ruling regarding the Sikkimese Nepali community, the incident at Damthang Road took place.
According to officials, a police team arrived on the scene quickly and took control of the situation after deploying sufficient resources.
On Saturday, the first day of the bandh, vandals broke into the SDF headquarters on Bypass Road. According to police, they have detained three people in connection with the vandalism and are looking for the other perpetrators.
According to police, those detained have been booked under IPC section 147 (rioting).
In Gangtok, ten SDF members were also detained for burning Prem Singh Tamang's effigy. They said that former minister Tshering Wangdi Lepcha and youth leader Arun Limbu were among those detained.
The Supreme Court's ruling on January 13 that extended income tax exemption to all long-time residents of the state while referring to the Sikkimese Nepali community as immigrants sparked uproar from the general populace.
In response to the problem, the Joint Action Committee (JAC) has also demanded a Sikkim Bandh on February 8.
In its ruling dated January 13, 2023, the Supreme Court instructed the government to alter Section 10 (26AAA) of the Income Tax Act of 1961 to include income tax exemption for all Indian residents residing in Sikkim as of or before the merger date of April 26, 1975 while defining "Sikkimese."
The state government has already requested a review of the case from the Supreme Court.
