This historical Mela is held every year near the Jonbeel wetlands and it is a three-day festival that brings together multiple tribal communities and local residents
of Morigaon to a unique way of exchange of goods. This practice has survived for centuries despite the domination of the digital economy.
The Jonbeel Mela’s foundation is the barter trade, where people exchange agricultural produce, handicrafts, and other essentials without the use of money. Tribes from the various hills such as the Karbi, Tiwa, and Khasi join the fair with freshly produced and traditional items, while locals
from the plains offer rice, fish, and other goods in return. This traditional system fosters cooperation and symbolizes the spirit of self-reliance and community bonding.
This mela’s emergence traces back to the 15th century during the reign of the Ahom King Rudra Singha who established it as a marketplace to reinforce ties among various communities. After years, it evolved into a cultural hub, displaying traditional dance, music, and culinary delights
alongside the trade activities.
During the time of online transactions and cashless payments, the Jonbeel mela remains a delight for the people of Assam. It offers a glimpse into a sustainable way of living where human relationships, trusts, and ecological balance take priority over monetary profits.
The fair also carries a ceremonial significance, with rituals performed by the Tiwa King and his council to bless the occasion. For the people involved in this mela, this is not only an event but also a celebration of Assam’s timeless traditions and a reminder of the lasting values of simplicity and harmony.
