His resignation is seen as an effort to maintain transparency and avoid any ethical complications in the matter
Digital Desk: The Chief Minister of Assam, Himanta Biswa Sarma sent his resignation to the Gauhati High Court Bar Association because he recognized the conflict that emerged over the surroundings of the proposed Judicial Township at Rangmahal in North Guwahati.
The High Court Bar Association members intensified their opposition to the court relocation project, so Sarma submitted his resignation on 30th April. The Chief Minister submitted his resignation through a letter, which stressed the outdated infrastructure of the current High Court building because modern court requirements were no longer met.
The government of Assam supports the Judicial Township at Rangmahal development after its approval by the Gauhati High Court to build a new court complex. The Bar Association opposes the relocation plan due to practical and logistical complications, which have intensified differences between lawyers and governmental officials.
Highlighting the potential conflict of interest, both the Chief Minister and former Bar Association member Sarma declared it improper to serve on the body while this controversial issue remains active. His resignation is seen as an effort to maintain transparency and avoid any ethical complications in the matter.
The resignation brings fresh aspects to the heated discussion about the proposed judicial township that continues to dominate Assam’s legal and political discussions. The ongoing development agenda faces resistance from within the legal community and shows no immediate sign of consensus regarding the relocation.
