Assam Flood: Rain continues to cause havoc, Guwahati struggles with artificial floods

ASDMA report stated that the Brahmaputra River was also flowing above the danger level.

Digital Desk: After just recovering from the destruction inflicted by pre-monsoonal rains in Assam last month, the state's flood situation worsened on Tuesday due to continuous heavy rainfall since June 13.

On early Tuesday, four labourers were killed in a landslide induced by severe rains in Guwahati's Boragaon area, while 8,000 people were affected in seven other districts: Darrang, Dhemaji, Dibrugarh, Dima-Hasao, Goalpara, Nalbari, and South Salmara.

Assam State Disaster Management Authority (ASDMA) reports that more than 600 people are in relief camps in the worst-affected district, which includes Guwahati. On Tuesday, at least 12 landslides and many cases of urban flooding were reported in Guwahati alone.

Notably, rainfall has been pouring continuously in Guwahati since June 13, causing flooding in some low-lying areas. With major arterial highways inundated in waist-deep water, life in the city has halted. Rescue activities are currently being carried out by the State Disaster Response Fund, as well as the district administration, Fire & Emergency Services, and the police.

The circumstances caused the Kamrup Metropolitan district administration to issue an alert on Tuesday, advising people not to leave their homes "unless necessary" and closing all schools and educational institutions.

ASDMA report stated that the Brahmaputra River was also flowing above the danger level. Moreover, Guwahati's Regional Meteorological Centre has issued a red alert for Assam and neighbouring Meghalaya, predicting "heavy to extremely heavy rainfall" in both states.
