Assam Govt to pay Rs 250 more to Orunodoi beneficiaries to Pay Electricity Bills

The beneficiaries of the "Orunodoi" scheme receive monthly financial support from the state government in the amount of Rs 1,000.

Digital Desk: The Assam government has decided to pay an additional amount of Rs 250 to economically weak families to help them pay their monthly electricity bills.

Himanta Biswa Sarma, the chief minister of Assam, said this on Saturday while introducing the "Orunodoi Month" and at a press conference at the Janata Bhawan in Guwahati.

The beneficiaries of the "Orunodoi" scheme, a major initiative of the state administration that currently covers close to 20 lakh people, would start receiving the fixed additional amount from October.

The beneficiaries of the "Orunodoi" scheme receive monthly financial support from the state government in the amount of Rs 1,000.

According to CM Sarma, the Orunodoi beneficiaries will begin receiving Rs 1,250 per month from October. Their electricity bills will be paid with the additional Rs 250. The amount might have been paid directly to the power company by the government, but it chose to encourage individual responsibility instead.

Sarma added that the scheme's beneficiary list would be revised in the next two months.

Notably, till September 20, student volunteers will visit households to update the list. After the field visits are complete, the district committees will finalise the list by October 10. He stated that the amended list is intended to include 6 lakh more eligible families.

"Orunodoi beneficiaries have been asked to leave the programme voluntarily if they no longer meet the requirements. Both online and offline methods are available, and 459 of these families have already given up receiving assistance under the program," Sarma said.
