    Assam Journalists' Association demands an upsurge in copyists' pension and advertisement rates

    Digital Desk: The Journalists Association of Assam (JAA) conducted an important executive meeting here on Sunday, presided over by the president and distinguished journalist Dhirendra Nath Chakraborty. 

    Dalim Phukan, general secretary of the JAA, gave a report outlining the objectives at the meeting. Bhupen Goswami, JAA's chief advisor and national vice president of the National Union of Journalists India, addressed the numerous issues confronting the media in recent years and urged journalists to work with ethics and zeal.

    Based on their own experiences, Mayukh Goswami, Sandeep Sharma, Pranjal Bordoloi, Sunil Bora, Manas Pratim Hazarika, Sudip Sharma Chowdhury, Kumar Nripendra Rajbanshi, Paramananda Deka, Geeta Saharia, Trishna Dal Pegu, Pooja Sharma, Geetimalika Rabha, and Sabin Deka made various recommendations during the session for the welfare of journalists and the media 

    The executive meeting passed a series of resolutions addressing important challenges confronting journalists and the media. The awful issues encountered by the newspaper organisations were reviewed in depth in the meeting, as the price of printing supplies, including newsprint, rose by 100 per cent, including GST.

    On the other side, the JAA has expressed grave concern with the lack of an increase in the prices for government advertisements since 2014, and a resolution was adopted requesting that the government increase these rates by 100%. 

    In addition, a resolution was passed calling for the creation of media councils to oversee media and journalistic affairs, the adoption of the Protection of Journalists Act, the expansion of the Journalists' Welfare Fund of Assam's corpus fund to Rs. 100 crores, an increase in the journalist pension to Rs. 20,000, and the payment of pensions to 30 journalists annually.

    A unanimous resolution was also agreed to submit a memorandum in this regard to Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma and Minister for Information, Public Relations, and Parliamentary Affairs, Pijush Hazarika. 

    The meeting agreed to organise the 14th JAA State Conference and North East Journalists Meet, as well as a journalists' workshop, in Guwahati in the second week of February 2023.
