Barpeta Faces Alarming Rise in HIV Cases
A significant portion of these HIV-positive individuals are drug users

Digital Desk: The number of HIV patients addicted to drugs is rising steadily across the state, with individuals aged between 20 and 40 being the most affected. Many of these people living with HIV are also drug users. The number of such cases has gone up in the Barpeta district compared to previous years.

According to the Barpeta District AIDS Control authority, out of all the registered patients in 2024, 101 were tested positive for HIV. This year, from January to April, 181 people registered, and 43 of them were identified as HIV positive, just within four months.

The link between drug addiction and HIV is becoming increasingly evident, raising serious public health concerns in Barpeta and beyond. We need to pay immediate attention, intervene, and provide rehabilitation to handle these two issues.
