BJP is violating Model Code of Conduct in Assam, accuses Congress

The APCC claims to have evidence of these violations, including videos circulated on social media platforms

Digital Desk: In a letter addressed to The Hon’ble Chief Electoral Officer of Assam, the Assam Pradesh Congress Committee (APCC) has alleged blatant violations of the Model Code of Conduct by the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP).

According to the APCC, the BJP has been distributing government forms featuring photographs of Prime Minister Shri Narendra Modi and Chief Minister of Assam Shri Himanta Biswa Sarma, while urging voters to fill them out to avail benefits under various government schemes, notably Arunodoi. These activities, which are allegedly widespread across Assam, are said to be occurring during the period of the Election Code of Conduct.

The letter says, “It is has been observed that the Bharatiya Janata Party has been openly violating the Model Code of Conduct and the Representation of People Act 1951 by way of carrying different Government circulated Forms having the photographs of the Hon’ble Prime Minister Shri Narendra Modi and the Hon’ble Chief Minister of Assam Shri Himanta Biswa Sarma and distributing them house to house, asking voters to fill the Government Forms for getting the benefits of Arunodoi and other such Government Schemes.”

The APCC claims to have evidence of these violations, including videos circulated on social media platforms such as Facebook, YouTube, and WhatsApp. Despite the apparent visibility of these infractions, the APCC accuses the Election Commission of turning a blind eye to the matter.

“It is of utmost essential that for holding a free and fair election, the eye and ears of the

Election Commissioner should remain open. However, on the contrary, it has been observed that in the State of Assam, the Election Commission has kept its eyes and ears shut, due to which inspite of the video showing clear violation of the Election Code of Conduct, which is widely published and trolled in the social media platforms such as Facebook, YouTube, Whatsapp etc., the same is not been seen and heard of by the Election Commission. Suo-moto actions should have been taken against the members and political party involved in the acts,” the letter further reads.

In the letter, Anowar Ahmed, the General Secretary of the Assam Pradesh Congress Committee, urges the Election Commission to take immediate action against the BJP and its associates for breaching the Model Code of Conduct and the Representation of People Act 1951.

Another letter from the party accuses BJP, “...the Bharatiya Janata Party has been violating the Model Code of Conduct and the Representation of People Act 1951 in the ensuing Lok Sabha Election, 2024 by circulation various schemes highlighting distribution of monetary packages to the tune of Rs.10,000/-, Rs.12,500/- and Rs.25,000/- to students of different categories. These packages with monetary references are violation of the Representation of People Act as well as the Model Code of Conduct that is in force now.”
