CAA protest was staged to hold back Assam: Pijush Hazarika

Digital Desk: Assam Minister Pijush Hazarika on Thursday claimed that the protest against the Citizenship Amendment Act (CAA) had begun prior to the direct recruitment exam and that it was an attempt to hold back these candidates.

At a press conference, Pijush Hazarika said, "Everyone is free to have their own beliefs and strive towards it. All of those opposed to CAA have their own opinions, just as we do. We appreciate other people's opinions, but I implore them not to discourage the Assamese people by disseminating false information."

He continued by citing a few examples from the day the Citizenship Amendment Bill (CAB) was passed as an Act in 2019, claiming that false information was circulating online.

"On that day (10 December 2019), a false rumour circulated on WhatsApp claiming that 2.5 crores Hindu Bangladeshis will join Assam on the day the bill was passed into law. And these people would travel by truck to Upper Assam to seize the properties. But nothing of the sort occurred on that day or afterward," he claimed.

He asserted that the CAA does not state that Assam will get millions of Hindu Bangladeshis. The information being circulated is false.

Hazarika further requested people not to spread false information in order to harm Assam or Assamese people.

The exams for direct recruitment will take place on August 21, August 28, and September 11. The recruitment exam will be held for around 30,000 grade III and IV posts that will commence in 25 districts of Assam. The number of applicants likely to sit for the examinations is 14 lakh.
