    Cyclone Sitrang: Rain dampens Diwali cheer in several NE states
     With rain dampening the mood of Durga Puja festivities lately in most northeastern states, "Sitrang" negatively impacted the region's Diwali cheerfulness and merriment.

    Digital Desk: Light to heavy rains from Cyclone Sitrang on Monday disrupted regular life in several northeastern states and dampened Diwali celebrations in the region. 

    On Monday evening, the India Meteorological Department (IMD) stated that cyclonic storm Sitrang, pronounced "Si-Trang" over the Bay of Bengal, as predicted is highly likely to cross the Bangladesh coast between Tinkona Island and Sandwip near Barisal in the early hours of Tuesday. 

    On Monday, the IMD predicts light to moderate rainfall in most areas with heavy to very heavy rainfall in isolated areas in north Assam, Arunachal Pradesh, Nagaland, and Manipur; heavy to extremely heavy rainfall in southern Assam, Meghalaya, Mizoram, and Tripura.

    According to the IMD, heavy to very heavy and extremely heavy rains, with squally wind speeds reaching 50-60 kmph and gusting up to 70 kmph, are quite likely throughout most of Tripura's eight districts. 

    With rain dampening the mood of Durga Puja festivities lately in most northeastern states, the unseasonal rains induced by the deep depression and Cyclonic storm "Sitrang" negatively impacted the region's Diwali cheerfulness and merriment.

    Though light to moderate rains disrupted daily life, no serious mishaps or damage have been reported in the northeastern states as of yet. 

    Over 120 National Disaster Response Force (NDRF) personnel were airlifted to Tripura from Guwahati on Tuesday to be deployed in various districts to deal with the potential cyclonic and flood situation.

    Six of the eight northeastern states issued the highest alert on Sunday, urging all affected districts, emergency management authorities, and agencies to be vigilant. 

    The state governments have requested that the NDRF deploy more troops in regions where high to extremely heavy rains are expected due to Cyclone Sitrang' from Monday to Wednesday. 

    Maximum rainfall is expected to reach 200 mm.

    Three southern Assam districts — Cachar, Karimganj, and Hailakandi — as well as all 11 districts of Mizoram, all 8 districts of Tripura, and the majority of Nagaland's 16 districts, have taken precautionary preparations to deal with potential cyclonic circumstances. 

    Tripura Chief Minister Manik Saha reviewed the situation in Agartala with all departments, the Army, and the Central paramilitary forces, demanding their active cooperation. 

    While briefing the media, Tripura Information and Cultural Affairs Minister Sushanta Chowdhury stated that the state government had revoked all official leaves for the next one week and that schools and educational institutions will be closed for three days beginning October 24.

    The Tripura government has taken 30 steps and actions. These include vehicle movement limitations across the state on October 25 and 26, the opening of a suitable number of relief centres with adequate supplies of relief goods, the preparation of an adequate number of Quick Reaction Teams, and regular assessments of the situation.
