On Tuesday afternoon, the elderly couple identified as Soneswar Gogoi and Devika Gogoi were attacked at their residence in Badulipar of Dergaon, Golaghat.
After the deadly attack, both were rushed to the Jorhat Medical College, where Soneswar Gogoi breathed his last and Debika Gogoi is undergoing treatment.
Police conducted an intensive investigation on Tuesday evening and arrested an accused, identified as Santosh Ghatowar.
However, police conducted a night operation using sniffer dogs after they suspected that other people might also be involved in the incident.
Meanwhile, the body of Soneswar Gogoi brought back from the hospital, was not cremated last night, and the community arranged for the cremation on Wednesday morning.
It is noteworthy that within the past three years, six elderly people, including Soneswar Gogoi from the same lineage have lost their lives at the hands of unidentified criminals in the same neighbourhood.
The other five victims are Raju Gogoi, Rina Gogoi, Kusheshwar Gogoi, Mridul Gogoi, and Promila Gogoi.
This appears to be a concerning pattern of attacks targeting elderly members of the Gogoi family in the Badulipur area of Dergaon, Golaghat District in Assam.
Till now, police have arrested one suspect but continue to investigate the possibility of additional perpetrators involved in this attack.
