Digital Desk: An unidentified vehicle allegedly collided with an elephant cub, resulting in the death of the cub on National Highway 36, which passes through Doboka Reserve forest. The unknown vehicle has been identified as a dumper, but the credentials of the vehicle have not yet been recovered by the authorities.
The accident is said to have happened when a herd of elephants were crossing the Doboka Akashiganga connecting National Highway 36. According to the sources, the vehicle driver fled the location after the incident.
The police have arrived at the location. The forest department personnel also reached the place. The investigation and search for the driver and the vehicle are underway. No official statement has been recorded yet.
Out of 494 elephants in the country, 121 died in Assam between 2017–18 and 2021–2022. Assam thus accounted for 24.49 per cent of elephant deaths in India over the previous five years. Out of 80 elephants nationwide, 27 elephants in the state have died in train accidents during the last five years.
State Forest Minister Chandra Mohan Patowary stated in February that the confrontation between humans and elephants in Assam results in the deaths of about 70 people and 80 elephants annually on average.
Out of the different causes of death, there were 65 poisoning deaths, 40 poaching deaths, 202 electrocutions, 102 rail accidents, 261 deaths from unknown causes, and 18 deaths from lightning strikes.
