Guwahati : The fruits and vegetable markets are nowadays flooded with artificially ripened food products which are the main cause for various health hazards. In a recent crackdown, FDA officials seized 36 quintal mangoes from Fancy Bazaar Fruit market here on May 21st, 2019.
The drive was conducted by the officials of the Food Safety Department (FDA) namely, LR Nampui, Champak Kumar Pathak, Tarun Das and Anil Sharma. The FDA officials found that the wholesalers were using calcium carbide, an agent that produces acetylene gas that acts as the natural ripening agent ethylene to accelerate the ripening process. Two people were also booked in relation to the seizure.
An official on the condition of anonymity said that due to poor control system and high demand for ripened mangoes at huge numbers the retailers and manufacturers use the artificial methods thus putting people buying from them at greater level of high health risk.
