Guwahati : Firebrand peasant leader Akhil Gogoi on Thursday demanded immediate arrest of All India United Democratic Front (AIUDF) chief and Dhubri MP Maulana Badruddin Ajmal for “attempting to murder” the journalist.

Ajmal hurled abuses, yanked and threw the mic of a reporter when he was asked whether his party would go with the Congress party of remain with the Bharatiya Janata Party on Wednesday during a press conference in Hatsingimari, South Salmara Mankachar district. Ajmal had threatened to smash the head of the journalist.

“This very act of Ajmal falls under IPC Section 307 (Attempt to murder). He not only misbehaved with the journalist but also threatened to smash his head. He snatched away the boom. Ajmal’s supporters present at the spot also threatened to attack the journalist,” said Gogoi here on Thursday.

He added, “The life of the journalist is at risk as he is now known to the supporters of Ajmal. At any given point of time, the journalist might face death threat. Hence, security should be provided to the journalist and the AIUDF leader should be arrested under IPC Section 307. If he is not arrested, it will be prove that the BJP government is safeguarding the MP. We request the the Assam Police to arrest Ajmal at the earliest.”
