    Digital Desk: Founded on 26th January , 1948 at Guwahati in Assam GU remains as the oldest university across Northeast India. The Assam Legislative Assembly founded GU on January 26, 1948 through the enactment of their passed act to become a prominent educational institution in Northeast India. In 2024 the institution achieved the 40th place according to National Institutional Ranking Framework (NIRF) while placing among India's top 100 universities. On 5th July , 2024 the National Assessment and Accreditation Council (NAAC) granted the institution its 'A+' accreditation through its 4th cycle of assessment.

    The initial foundation with 18 affiliated colleges and 8 postgraduate departments in 1948 has expanded commendably. GU maintains 39 graduate departments alongside its constituent Law and Engineering College and the Institute of Distance and Open Learning (IDOL). The 341 affiliated colleges of the university provide various undergraduate and postgraduate programs that include subjects across Arts, Science, Commerce, Law and Engineering disciplines. The institution serves as an AIU member alongside its ACU status.

    The university campus exists in Jalukbari where natural boundaries include the Brahmaputra River to the north and the southern hillock. The university's original campus has transformed into Gopinath Bardoloi Nagar where approximately 6000 people now make their home and 3700 students reside in student accommodations.

    Assam's Chief minister Himanta Biswa Sarma,  extended his best wishes as Gauhati University celebrates its Foundation Day by sending warm greetings to its administrative team alongside faculty members and students together with all alumni.
