Digital Desk: The supreme judicial body has criticized one of the state's most important religious locations for its lack of hygiene. The Supreme Court of India stated that Assam's Kamakhya Temple was not receiving proper maintenance and that there should be no compromise on hygiene when it comes to a public place of such importance.
The Supreme Court of India's bench of Justices Ajay Rastogi and C T Ravikumar made this observation. The matter under discussion was related to the maintenance of this major religious attraction. The case involved many letters from visitors to the temple alleging that the authorities were not upholding proper hygiene standards.
"I was there during the vacations, and the temple is not being properly maintained. This is my personal opinion. There can't be any compromise on hygiene," Justice Ajay Rastogi stated.
At the hearing, senior advocate Rajeev Dhavan spoke on behalf of the temple. He informed the court that the issues had been resolved at the temple. In order to find an appropriate solution to the hygiene and cleanliness issue, expert bodies like the Indian Institute of Technology have been involved. In order to give the parties a chance to reach a mutually agreeable resolution, the supreme court postponed the case's hearing until January 2023.
Previously, in December 2021, the Supreme Court dismissed a contempt petition filed by the elected Dolois (priests) representing the members of Kamakhya Devalaya's Bordeuri Samaj alleging misuse of funds by the Kamakhya Debutter Board.
The Assam Kamakhya Temple, situated in Guwahati, is one of the Shakti Peeths of the Mother Goddess. For devotees of the Hindu Shaktism sect, it is one of the most important locations for worship. During her recent tour to Northeast India, India's President, Droupadi Murmu, also visited this temple. The biggest festival held in this temple is the Ambubachi Mela. Other celebrations include Navratri and Manasha Puja.
