Myanmar Army raids on Mizoram have resulted in fresh inflow of refugees

The president of the Zokhawthar village council claimed that hundreds of migrants from Myanmar had just invaded Mizoram.

Digital Desk: A local leader of the Mizoram-Myanmar border town stated on Friday that the recent torching of a Myanmar village close to the Indian border and the killing of two abducted brothers from the area by the Myanmar Army has sparked a new inflow from the neighbouring nation.

The Myanmar Army burned down Haimual village in Myanmar's Chin state and kidnapped five people, including two children of a leader of a civil defense force, from the village on Sunday.

In recent days, Lalmuanpuia, the president of Zokhawthar village council, claimed that hundreds of people from Myanmar had entered Mizoram.

The first border village in Mizoram's Champhai district, Zokhawthar, is situated about 7 kilometres from Haimual village.

According to Lalmuanpuia, who cited sources from Haimual, the Myanmar Army attacked the village on Sunday and set at least 15 homes on fire.

He claimed that they had also kidnapped five other people, including Lanunpuii, 17, and her 16-year-old brother, Lalruatmawia.

According to him, the two teens were the offspring of Lalzidinga, a leader of the local People's Defence Force (PDF), the military arm of the National Unity Government of Myanmar, which is composed of pro-democracy activists and young people.

He claimed that Lalzidinga was able to flee as his home was being searched.

According to Lalmuanpuia, three additional abductees were freed by the Myanmar Army on Tuesday, while the bodies of Lalnunpuii, a PDF member, and her brother were found in a jungle.

According to him, the encounter at Haimual and the recent attack on the army camp in the border town of Khawmawi between Myanmar and India have led to a new migration of people from the neighbouring nation into Zokhawthar and the nearby villages.

State home department officials could not be reached to confirm the number of new entries.

Since the Myanmar Army overthrew the government in a coup in February of last year, thousands of people from Myanmar have fled to Mizoram.

The state government, NGOs, student organisations, churches, and village administrations are providing food and other supplies to the Myanmar people who are seeking refuge in various Mizoram locations.

Renting homes has also been a common source of support for many refugees.

Approximately 156 impromptu relief camps, according to official sources, have been erected throughout the state.

The majority of people from Myanmar are from the Chin state and are of Mizo ancestry. The majority of them reside in relief camps, while a small number rent homes or are housed by local relatives.

Champhai, Siaha, Lawngtlai, Serchhip, Hnahthial, and Saitual are the six Mizoram districts that share a 510 km long international border with the Chin state of Myanmar.
