NIA team interrogates 14 Rohingyas in Silchar, Assam

The NIA investigation team questioned them to determine their motivation for travelling from Jammu to Silchar.

Digital Desk: A team from the National Investigation Agency (NIA) has arrived in Silchar to investigate the recent arrest of 26 Rohingyas in this town.

On Saturday night, 26 Rohingyas, including 12 children, six men, and eight women (from three different families), were detained at Central Road in Silchar town after failing to show any valid documents.

As per reports, they were later arrested, taken to court, and transferred to the Silchar detention centre.

According to the police investigation, the foreigners travelled from Jammu and were asked to visit Silchar by someone from this town. The investigation also revealed that the Rohingyas lived in Jammu for many years.

According to sources, the NIA team arrived in Silchar on Thursday and spent nearly two hours interrogating 14 Rohingyas (six men and eight women Rohingyas) at the detention centre (Silchar central jail).

As per sources, the NIA interrogated them to determine their motivation for travelling from Jammu to Silchar, how and when they arrived in India, how they arrived in Jammu, who assisted them in obtaining lodging in Jammu, where they planned to go from Silchar, and who asked them to come to Silchar.

Another source stated that the NIA team, which did not interact with the media, obtained vital information from the Rohingya inmates after questioning them.

Furthermore, the investigating agency has received information about rackets in Cachar district's Gumrah and Jellalpore areas that assist illegal immigrants in entering Indian territory via the Indo-Bangladesh international border in Cachar district in exchange for money, according to the source.

Cachar police provided little information about the NIA team's visit. According to Superintendent of Police Ramandeep Kaur, the NIA team came to Silchar for a previous case and had nothing to do with the arrest of the 26 Rohingyas.

Several Rohingyas have been arrested in Barak Valley, which shares borders with Bangladesh in Cachar and Karimganj districts.

On July 24, 2021, GRP officials arrested fifteen Rohingyas at Badarpur railway station, including three women and six minors. On October 13, 2021, two Rohingyas were apprehended from a bus in Churaibari, Karimganj district.
