Digital Desk: Prime Minister Narendra Modi praised an innovative initiative to tackle man-elephant conflict by the people of Nagaon district of Assam. PM Modi on Sunday lauded the villagers of Nagaon for their initiative in his monthly radio program "Mann Ki Baat".
In an audio clip, he featured "Haathi Bandhu", meaning friends of the elephants, and their innovative effort to plant Napier grass on about 800 Bighas of barren land in Nagaon District.
The villagers joined their hands to plant Napier grass, a grass elephants prefer to eat. As a result, the wild elephants visited the fields frequently to eat the grass. This brought much relief to thousands of villagers as they had been facing man-elephant conflict for a long time. Before
the initiative, the elephants used to come to the fields and were destroying their crops in search of food.
Taking to X, PM Modi shared the audio clip and said, "An effort in Assam's Nagaon to reduce man-animal conflict has the power to motivate everyone."
After PM Modi's post, Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma also posted on X, "A while back Adarniya Shri @narendramodi ji spoke about the Hathibandhu initiative of Assam in his #MannKiBaat address. The initiative is a natural solution to reduce man-elephant conflicts."
