Digital Desk: Renowned artist Neel Pawan Baruah passed away today (October 28) at the Guwahati Medical College Hospital (GMCH).

After a prolonged illness, the renowned Assamese artist died on Friday at 3:15 p.m. at the age of 86.

Apart from painting, he was proficient in pottery, poetry, mask making, and reviving the art in the famed Brindabani Bastra. He was not attached to any specific style and was known to work on the spur of the moment.

Neel Pawan Baruah, a nonconformist, founded the Assam Fine Arts & Craft Society.

Earlier, hospital authorities stated that he is refusing to eat because his oral intake has decreased in the last 10 days and he has been drowsy for the past four days.

Reportedly, after he was examined, it was found that fine creps had formed in his left hemithorax, making it difficult for him to breathe normally.

Neel Pawan Baruah's paintings are abstract and use unusual mediums to portray an idea. In certain instances, there is an idea concealed inside an idea in his paintings, making him the best artist because very few artists can convey many ideas in a single painting.

Neel Pawan Baruah was married to famed Assamese singer Dipali Borthakur, who was popularly known as "The Nightingale of Assam". After the singer was diagnosed with motor neuron disease, she spent more than 50 years in a wheelchair before passing away in 2018.

Baruah is the son of famous Assamese writer Binanda Chandra Baruah, known as "Dhwani Kavi" for his musically inspired writings.

Neel Pawan Baruah is also credited with designing the covers of several Assamese novels.
