Udalguri : A man hailing from Udalguri district of Assam committed suicide on March 4th, 2019 as his name did not appear in the updated draft National Register of Citizens (NRC).

The man identified as Bhaben Das (45 years), was a resident of Bholabari Tea Estate under the Kalaigaon Police Station of the Udalguri district, ended his life to “escape humiliation of being marked as a foreigner”, the locals claimed.
Bhaben Das is survived by his old mother, wife and a child.

Bhaben Das used to work as a wage earner. He was depressed for quite a long time after his name was not enlisted in the draft NRC. “Assuming that he will be humiliated and tortured, he might have taken this drastic step,” said one of the neighbours.
The NRC is a register containing names of all genuine Indian Citizens residing in Assam. The Update process of NRC started in the year 2013 under the strict monitoring of the Supreme Court of India. The Supreme Court has set July 31st, 2019 as the deadline for the publication of the NRC.
