ULFA (I) challenges Assam Police to prove Bhargav Gogoi’s involvement

On Saturday, in a joint operation with the CRPF, Assam police arrested Gogoi, a resident of Bamunbari.

Digital Desk: United Liberation Front of Asom (ULFA-I) hardliner factions challenged Assam police to prove the involvement of Bhargav Gogoi, who was recently arrested by Dibrugarh police on charges of being a handler of the banned outfit.

On Saturday, in a joint operation with the CRPF, Assam police arrested Gogoi, a resident of Bamunbari. According to police, Gogoi reportedly maintained contact with ULFA-I chief Abhijit Gogoi alias Aiseng Asom and was hiring new cadres for the organisation.

On Monday, Rumel Asom, a member of the ULFA (I) publicity wing, said in an email statement, “Gogoi is not involved with the group in any way. We challenge Assam police to prove that he is a Ulfa (I) member. State police have been harassing youths and people of the state in the name of Ulfa (I) just to gain personal benefits and perks. This is a sign of mental imbalance of state police officials.”

According to the outfit, new cadres were only joining the group as they were motivated by the idea of a sovereign Assam.

“Police must acknowledge that the conflict between ULFA (I) and the Indian government is not a matter of law and order,” the extremist leader added.
