Digital Desk: In Guwahati, the costs of vegetables, including onions and potatoes, have skyrocketed. Wholesalers sold potatoes to retailers for Rs 2,200 per quintal on June 15.
Today, shopkeepers had to pay Rs 2,400 per quintal for potatoes. Similarly, till June 15, shops had to buy white onion from wholesalers at Rs 1,800 per quintal. They bought onion for Rs 2,100 per quintal today.
According to retailers, rains have reduced the availability of vegetables, and if the rains continue for a few more days, vegetable prices will rise even more.
In Guwahati, retailers no longer sell veggies for less than Rs 80 per kg. They sell potatoes for Rs 36 per kg, onions for Rs 36/37 per kg, lesera (A kind of a bean) for Rs 65 per kg, lady's finger for Rs 60 per kg, tomato for Rs 60 per kg, carrot for Rs 70 per kg, bean for Rs 65 per kg, yellow pumpkin for Rs 60 per kg, green capsicum for Rs 85 per kg, and so on.
