'Cannot have two white-ball captains': Ganguly on sacking Virat as ODI's captain

Mumbai: After receiving numerous slams from netizens, BCCI president Saurav Ganguly finally opened up about the sacking of Indian cricketer Virat Kohli as the One Day International (ODI) captain.

BCCI president Ganguly commented that once Virat Kohli denied continuing as India's T20 captain, the selectors chose to give the One Day International (ODI) reins to Rohit Sharma. The national team cannot afford "too much leadership" with two captains in the limited-overs setup.

On Wednesday, BCCI announced Rohit Sharma as the new ODI captain. Soon after the announcement, BCCI has received mixed reactions over social media platforms from cricket fans.

Several fans have slammed BCCI for suddenly replacing the ODI captain from Virat reins to Rohit. However, many have also posted positive posts on the selection of Rohit Sharma as the new ODI caption.

"We had asked Virat not to step down as T20 captain but he didn't wish to continue as captain. So, the selectors sensed that they cannot have two captains in two white-ball forms. That's too much of leadership," stated Ganguly.

Ganguly added that the selectors felt that different forms of leadership in the white-ball format would lead to confusion. He said, " that's why the Chetan Sharma-led committee recommended that it's more acceptable to have one leader."

"I don't know (about confusion) but that's what they (selectors) felt. That's how this conclusion was arrived at - that let Rohit captain in white ball and let Virat be the red-ball skipper," Ganguly further added.

Commenting on Rohit Sharma, Ganguly said he wouldn't like to make any predictions but is confident of the new skipper's abilities. "It's very difficult to predict. I wish him all the best and hope he does a good job," he stated.
