World Athletics Championship: Ace Javelin Thrower Neeraj Chopra to lead 28-member Indian team

Neeraj Chopra reigning Diamond League champion is aiming for gold in Budapest after taking silver in the previous event...

Digital Desk: Olympic champion and ace javelin thrower Neeraj Chopra will lead India's campaign in the World Athletics Championships, which begin on August 19 in Budapest, Hungary, with the country fielding a 28-member team.

Surprisingly, the Sports Ministry rather than the Athletics Federation of India (AFI) announced the team.

Tajinderpal Singh Toor, the Asian record holder in shot put, has withdrawn from the August 19-27 extravaganza due to a groyne injury acquired during the Asian Championships in July.

High jumper Tejaswin Shankar, 800m runner K M Chanda, and 20km race walker Priyanka Goswami (also a national record holder) have also opted out of the World Championships to focus on the Asian Games in Hangzhou, China (September 23 to October 8).

Neeraj Chopra being the reigning Diamond League champion, is aiming for gold in Budapest after finishing second in Eugene, USA, in 2022.
