ICC said in a statement on Tuesday that Harmanpreet was handed the two-match suspension based on two separate breaches of its Code of Conduct.
Digital Desk: Following her outburst during the third and final One Day International (ODI) against Bangladesh in Dhaka, Indian women's cricket team captain Harmanpreet Kaur was given a two-match suspension by the International Cricket Council (ICC). On July 24th, 2023, Kaur expressed her dissatisfaction with an umpire's decision by smashing her bat on the stumps and gesturing angrily in Tanvir Ahmed's direction.
ICC said in a statement on Tuesday that Harmanpreet was handed the two-match suspension based on two separate breaches of its Code of Conduct.
She was found guilty of violating "showing dissent at an umpire's decision" under article 2.8 of the ICC Code of Conduct for Players and Player Support Personnel.
In addition, Kaur was penalised 25% of her match fee for committing a Level 1 penalty for "public criticism in relation to an incident occurring in an international match" when she openly attacked the match's umpiring during the presentation ceremony.
On Saturday, Harmanpreet smashed the stumps with her bat after being caught at slip by umpire Tanvir Ahmed. She then appeared to argue with the umpire before gesturing towards the crowd. She later called the umpiring standard "pathetic" during the post-match ceremony.
Three demerit points were recommended by the match officials for equipment damage, and one demerit point was suggested for openly insulting the match officials. The final choice will be made by the ICC. According to reports, the BCCI discussed the subject with the ICC.
She is now expected to be the first female cricketer to be found guilty of a level-two violation of the International Cricket Council's (ICC) code of conduct, which sets standards for player behaviour, as a result of her actions.
Cricket players rarely break the stumps in response to umpire decisions, either with the bat or by kicking them. By happenstance, the most recent instance took place in Bangladesh. Shakib Al Hasan, a Bangladesh all-rounder, was punished for three games and fined around US$ 5800 (for the Dhaka Premier League T20 match between Abahani Limited and Mohammedan Sporting Club in 2021).
According to ICC rules, a player's demerit points are changed into suspension points if they total four or more within a 24-month period. Three demerit points are anticipated in Kaur's case for damaging playing equipment and one for publicly criticising match officials. This results in a total of four demerit points, which translate into two suspension points and a two-match penalty.
It's not the first time Kaur has received a punishment. She earlier received a demerit point for throwing her helmet to the ground and verbally attacking her partner, Deepti Sharma, during the ODI World Cup 2017 semifinal match against Australia.
