IPL 2022: Shreyas Iyer appointed as KKR's captain for the upcoming season
Digital Desk: Shreyas Iyer has been named the Kolkata Knight Riders' (KKR) captain on Wednesday, ahead of the IPL 2022 season. In the prior IPL mega auction in Bengaluru, KKR settled Rs 12.25 crore for Shreyas.

Shreyas Iyer has previously captained the Delhi Capitals (DC) franchise, leading them to their first IPL final appearance in 2020.

Due to an injury, he was forced to miss the first half of the 2021 season, with Rishabh Pant filling in as captain. Shreyas returned for the season's final leg in the UAE, but DC chose to keep Pant as captain.

"We are happy first and foremost to have been able to bid for Shreyas in the IPL auction successfully & to have the opportunity for him to lead #TeamKKR. Shreyas has impressed everyone as a top-level batter, and we are convinced that he will flourish as a leader of #TeamKKR," stated Venky Mysore, KKR's CEO and MD, while making the news.

This will be a new beginning for the two-time IPL champions, and head coach Brendon McCullum expressed his excitement at the prospect of working closely with Shreyas.

"I am ecstatic to have Shreyas Iyer, one of India's brightest future leaders, assume the helm at KKR." "I've admired Shreyas' game and captaincy abilities from afar, and now I'm excited to work closely with him to help KKR achieve the success and style of play we desire," McCullum stated.

"I am incredibly happy to have gotten the opportunity to lead a great team like KKR," Shreyas Iyer stated after accepting the captaincy of KKR.

He further added, "The IPL as a tournament brings together the best players from various countries and cultures, and I am excited to lead this incredible group of individuals. I'd want to express my gratitude to KKR's owners, management, and support staff for allowing me to head this team, and I am convinced that we will discover the proper synergies to achieve the team's objectives. When it comes to Indian cricket, Kolkata and The Eden Gardens have a long and illustrious history, and I'm looking forward to adding to that legacy and making our fans proud of our team! Jeetbo Korbo Lorbo!"
