India had a great start to provide them with a second breakthrough from Shami...
Digital desk: Fast-bowler Mohammed Shami made history by being the first bowler from India to win multiple five-wicket hauls in ODI World Cups. At the HPCA Stadium in Dharamshala, Shami took five wickets against New Zealand to bowl them out for 273 runs in the first innings.
In India's ICC Men's Cricket World Cup 2023 match against New Zealand, Shami claimed the wickets of Will Young, Rachin Ravindra, Daryll Mitchell, Mitchell Santner, and Matt Henry. Shami ended up picking five wickets while giving away 54 runs in 10 overs.
India had a great start to provide them with a second breakthrough from Shami, who dismissed Young during the powerplay, leaving the Kiwis reeling at 19 for 2. After he finished his opening over, Mitchell and Ravindra faced India's pin-bowling onslaught and amassed a huge partnership of 159 runs in the middle overs.
To provide India with a crucial breakthrough, captain Rohit Sharma sent Shami back into the attack and he produced straight away, sending Ravindra back to the pavilion in the 34th over. After hitting six boundaries and one six in his 75 runs off 87 balls, Ravindra departed.
In the 48th over, he took his third wicket of the day, destroying Santner with a blistering yorker. As a result of New Zealand losing their seventh wicket, India was able to stop the run flow in the last overs.
On the very next ball, Shami knocked Matt Henry's leg stump off with a magnificent swinging delivery. Lockie Ferguson blocked a ferocious yorker bowled by Shami, who was on a hat-trick, to deny the Indian pacer.
But on the second-to-last delivery of the innings, Shami got rid of centurion Daryll Mitchell to clinch his five-wicket haul.
Mitchell became the first Kiwi batsman to score a century against India in the ODI World Cup in 48 years when he left the game after hitting 130 runs off 127 balls.
Despite his continued faith in the team management for selecting him for this pivotal World Cup 2023 match in Dharamshala, Shami's effort helped India bowl New Zealand out for 273 runs.
