Digital Desk: The International Cricket Council (ICC) announced on Tuesday (February 28) that India is one of eight teams who have earned automatic qualification for the Women's T20 World Cup 2024.
The Harmanpreet Kaur-led India was eliminated from the 2023 tournament after losing to the eventual champions Australia in the semi-final. Bangladesh will host the 2024 Women's T20 World Cup. Bangladesh has qualified for the tournament's ninth edition by virtue of being the hosts.
As per the qualification process, the top three teams from each group earn a direct qualification, along with the hosts and the highest-ranked team outside of the six direct qualifiers from the 10-team tournament.
Australia, New Zealand, and South Africa qualified for the 2024 edition as the top three teams from Group 1 in the tournament's league stage, while England, India, and the West Indies qualified from Group 2. Pakistan completes the top eight, securing their place as the next highest-ranked team in the Women's T20I team rankings as of February 27, 2023.
The remaining two spots will be determined through a global qualification in early 2024. The tournament's venues and dates will be announced soon. From the concluded Women's T20 World Cup 2023, Sri Lanka and Ireland failed to get a direct qualification. Although Sri Lanka is ranked eighth, Ireland is placed 10th.
Australia defeated South Africa in the final of the Women's T20 World Cup 2023 to capture a record-extending sixth title. Australia also completed a hat-trick of wins for the second time, having won three consecutive times in 2010, 2012, and 2014, and again in 2018, 2020, and 2023.
