ICC World Cup 2023: Indian Cricket team faces major blow as Shubman Gill suffers from dengue
Gill has so far scored 1230 runs in ODIs in 2023; another round of testing is scheduled for Gill on Friday...

Digital Desk: India has suffered a major setback ahead of its World Cup 2023 opener against Australia, as in-form starter Shubman Gill has been diagnosed with dengue fever.

He is being treated after testing positive for dengue fever just days before India's first match at the ICC Cricket World Cup 2023 on October 8.

According to sources, if Shubman Gill does not recover in time for the World Cup match against Australia, Ishan Kishan will take the field.

Gill had an outstanding year in ODI cricket in 2023. He has amassed 1230 runs in just 20 ODIs, making him the year's leading run-scorer in this format. His average is a whopping 72.35, with a strike rate of 105.03.

According to reports, the opener is now suffering from dengue fever. The BCCI medical team is taking care of him, with another round of tests slated for Friday, October 6. A decision on Gill is due after the test, but it appears that the ace batter will miss the opening match against Australia on Sunday in Chennai.

With Gill allegedly out of the match against Australia, India will try out Ishan Kishan at the top of the order to join Rohit Sharma. Kishan is now flourishing in the middle order for India, with his important 82 off 81 balls against Pakistan during the Asia Cup coming to the Indian side's rescue.

Talking about Gill, he is only 665 runs away from breaking Sachin Tendulkar's calendar-year world record of 1,894 runs.

Gill's achievement includes five centuries and five half-centuries, putting him in the company of legends like Virat Kohli and Sachin Tendulkar who have struck five or more hundred in a single year. Gill also finished as the highest run-scorer in the Asia Cup 2023, with 302 runs, and is on his way to becoming the No. 1 batter in the ICC ODI rankings.
