Digital Desk: Glenn Maxwell created a massive unbeaten score of 201 against Afghanistan in Australia's World Cup 2023 match in Mumbai on Tuesday, becoming the best individual score in a run chase.
During the ODI World Cup encounter against Afghanistan at the Wankhede Stadium in Mumbai on Tuesday, Maxwell set a new record for the highest score by a No. 6 hitter in ODIs, shattering the previous record held by Kapil Dev.
The innings was also Australia's first double-century, and it helped the team beat Afghanistan by three wickets and go to the semifinals. Maxwell became only the third batsman in World Cup history to score a double tonne.
Despite cramping and his team trailing by seven wickets, Maxwell farmed the strike and smashed a double century in 128 deliveries. His 202-run partnership with Pat Cummins for the eighth wicket was the greatest in ODIs.
The previous record in the second innings of an ODI was 193 off 170 deliveries by Pakistan's Fakhar Zaman against South Africa. Australia's previous best in an ODI was 185 against Bangladesh in 2011.
