Digital Desk: The Pakistan men's hockey team landed late Tuesday night in Chennai for the
Asian Champions Trophy 2023. The Pakistani squad arrived in India on Tuesday via the Attari-Wagah border in Amritsar and then flew to Chennai via Bangalore.
With three Champions Trophy victories,
Pakistan and India are the most successful teams in the tournament's history. They will begin their campaign against Malaysia on August 3. On August 9, India will play Pakistan.
The Asian Champions Trophy 2023 will be held from August 3 to 12 and will feature six teams: India, Pakistan, Korea, China, Malaysia, and Japan.
"We are always excited to play in India, and it adds to the pressure," Pakistan's Coach Sheikh Shahnaz remarked after the squad arrived.
"Good quality players know how to perform and deliver under pressure, so we are hopeful of a good show on and off the pitch," he added.
"We're here to play positive hockey, and I believe that India and Pakistan should play more matches against each other because it will help both teams take their games to the next level. The Asian Champions Trophy will also serve as a nice warm-up for the Hangzhou Asian Games because we will be competing against the same teams in China, so this competition will help us analyse our opponents' strengths and weaknesses. We are hoping to make it to the tournament's final," he further added to his statement.
Pakistan captain Umar Bhutta stated that his young team should be able to perform well under pressure and that he is excited to play in India.
"Many of our team's young players recently competed in the Junior Asia Cup." So, to some extent, this event will be familiar to them, and they will not find it difficult to adjust to the conditions here and play in such high-level competitions as I believe a sportsman is accustomed to soaking pressure and performing in crunch situations," he said.
