The other nominees for the honor were PV Sindhu, Lovlina Borgohain, Aditi Ashok, and Avani Lekhara. The Lifetime Achievement Award went to Karnam Malleswari.
Digital Desk: Olympic medalist in weightlifting Saikhom Mirabai Chanu, due to a public vote, was named BBC Indian Sportswoman of the Year 2021.
Mirabai Chanu, a Manipur native, made history by becoming the first Indian weightlifter to earn a silver medal at the quadrennial extravaganza in Tokyo last year.
Chanu won the prize ahead of golfer Aditi Ashok, boxer Lovlina Borgohain, para-shooter Avani Lekhara, and badminton star PV Sindhu. Last year, they made history by becoming the first Indian weightlifter to win a silver medal in the Summer Olympics.
Chanu became the first Indian weightlifter to win a silver medal at an Olympic Games. She finished second in the 49-kg category at Tokyo Olympics.

Chanu is currently in the United States of America for training. She stated in a press release that she will do everything she can to win gold in this year's Asian and Commonwealth Games. She also conveyed her gratitude to BBC India for the recognition.
