Shubman Gill was released from Chennai's Kaveri Hospital after being admitted due to a dip in platelet count...
Digital Desk: Shubman Gill, who missed India's first two World Cup 2023 matches against Australia and Afghanistan, appears to be out of the power-pact Pakistan match on Saturday as he recuperates from dengue fever.
For the first time after his illness, the BCCI acknowledged Gill's situation on Monday, issuing a statement stating that the 24-year-old did not travel with the squad to Delhi, where India will play Afghanistan on Wednesday. He was later hospitalised in Chennai due to a drop in his platelet count but was released on Monday evening.
Gill, on the other hand, has a doubtful start for the World Cup opener against Pakistan on October 14 in Ahmedabad.
According to reports, Gill's low platelet count aroused worries, causing medical authorities to urge therapy and advise against flying. Dr. Rizwan Khan, the BCCI's personal physician, is now treating Gill in Chennai. Gill arrived in Chennai with the rest of the Indian team on October 4, the day before India's World Cup opener.
"Shubman Gill had been on a drop for a couple of days at the Chennai team hotel. His platelet count, however, fell to 70,000, and like with dengue patients, once the count falls below 100,000. On Sunday night, when India played Australia, he was hospitalised for all essential tests but was released by Monday evening," a BCCI source told PTI on condition of confidentiality.
However, if Gill does not recuperate in time for the match against Pakistan, India will be in serious trouble. Ishan Kishan was promoted to open with Rohit Sharma, but he was out for a first-ball duck. Even if this is dismissed as a one-off failure — Ishan struck three consecutive half-centuries against the West Indies in August – Gill's absence is a major blow to the Indian Cricket team.
Shubman Gill, India's most in-form batsman, has amassed 1230 runs at an average of 72.35 this year, but he also enjoys batting in Ahmedabad, where he plays for the Gujarat Titans in the IPL.
However, assuming he will be a match-fit is an entirely distinct matter. Even if Gill arrived in Ahmedabad on the 12th or 13th, he would not have had a single practice session. If this is the case, the BCCI is unlikely to want to rush him back for now.
